Pollution Controlling Devices in Automobiles

Pollution is one of the most complex problems to solve for the human species, and it affects a broad spectrum of human civilization. It is threatening to jeopardize the entire forthcoming civilization. Now, you may wonder what the causes of pollution are. Of course, deforestation, human waste, and industrial pollution are some of the prime causes of pollution. Still, one of the factors that severely affect the percentage of PM emission is car pollution.

We know that cars run on sulfur-containing fuels, so when the engines burn these fuels, all the automobiles emit sulfur dioxide, which is a toxic pollutant. The SO2 gas leads to harmful contaminants in the air and is one of the prime causes of acid rain, smog, and chronic respiratory diseases in humans. However, it is easy to cut down the emission of toxic pollutants by using some emission regulatory technologies such as Catalytic Converters, Sensor Technologies, Enhanced Combustion Technology, Particulate Filters, Crankcase Emission Controls, Thermal Management Strategies, Alternative fuels, GHG Emission Reduction Technologies, Evaporative Emission Controls, Engine/Fuel Management, etc.

Now, let us look at some of the emission control devices.

1.       Sensor Technologies: These are of three types, i.e., temperature sensor, oxygen sensor, NOx sensor, etc. These technologies can be applied as a complete feedback loop system or can be added to lean-burn gasoline engines as an element of a high-tech engine control or diagnostic system.

2.       Catalytic Converters: This technology has been around in the business since the 1980s. The catalytic converters, commonly called the three-way catalytic converter, have been generally employed on gasoline vehicles that carry fewer loads. It is one of the pre-eminent and efficient emission control technology.

3.       Alternative Fuels: If you continue to drive cars on petrol or other fuels filled with sulfur, then the air pollution will continue to escalate; however, you can take hold of the situation by using some alternative fuels such as ethanol fuel, biodiesel fuel, and hydrogen. Many automobile researchers are striving hard to build designs and prototypes that can theoretically utilize renewable sources of energy for automobile operation. Since the world can run out of fuel very soon, the search for alternative fuel should be intensified, if not because of the fear of air pollution. Some automobile experts say that HICE (abbreviation for Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines) will run all cars in the future.

4.       Crankcase Emission Control: It is released into the market as a high-tech technology. The system consists of a pressure regulator, filter housing, pressure relief valve, and an oil check valve. The system can significantly reduce crankcase emissions and the number of PM emissions released into the atmosphere.

5.       Evaporative Emission Control: The primary objective of this technology is to decrease or eradicate the existence of vaporized HC in the atmosphere. Such vaporized HC pollutants create ground-level Ozone layers and photochemical smog.

Drawbacks of Car Pollution

Though the primary cause of Ozone depletion and climate change has been pinned on CO2 emissions, car pollutants and other hazardous gases can incur significant blows to the environment. All automobiles emit harmful gases that can lead to significant environmental concerns such as the Greenhouse effect, acid rain, smog, etc. Three of the most well-known snags of air pollution are global warming, human health, and water and soil pollution.

As you know, cars give out CO2, SO2, and other types of greenhouse gases, which intrinsically warm the planet and incur the Greenhouse Effect, and eventually add to the growing concerns of climate change.

Air pollution also directly causes acid rain and depletion of the ozone layer. The pollutant matter from oil trucks also does lead to the contamination of wetlands, rivers, and other natural resources.

Last but not least, depletion of the ozone layer and creation of smog can introduce irreversible and chronic illnesses such as lung and skin cancer in humans. So, thus, air pollution must be prevented.

Conclusion

Air pollution is directly related to climate change, and carpooling is not enough to prevent it. So, we need to introduce sophisticated technologies and intelligent measures in order to ensure a sustainable future.
